What is Knox?

Before I even begin, let me just say that every image in this post was taken with an ENB active. As much as I wish I could create this kind of appearance with vanilla Skyrim alone, I just can’t. I’d also like to put an emphasis on the fact that these are early images. A lot can and probably will change between what you see here and the final product. Whether it’s a little bit of dressing up, or a massive rework.

So I thought I should give you guys a little “here’s what’s been happening” post. I know I’d been silent for a couple of months before my little slew of releases the other day, and don’t think that those few mods were all I accomplished in that time.

So What is It?

About a month and a half ago I found myself in a discussion regarding the lack of any kind of sci-fi or cyberpunk styled mods for Skyrim. Having been a modder back in the days of Oblivion, I got to see a massive variety of mods surface, in various niches that just haven’t been filled with Skyrim. We had places like Duke City, which gave a modern shithole to put our favourite not-lore-friendly characters into, and a little bit of sci-fi at its underbelly. We had mods like The Starfleet, which gave us futuristic space ships to run around in. Some of us very lucky folks even had one or two rather incomplete, but incredible sci-fi mods which I shall not name. Skyrim doesn’t have a great deal of this in its modding community. That was one of my reasons for making Skyrim Academy, and it was my biggest reason for beginning work on Knox.

So, brass tacks. Knox is a pseudo-cyberpunk city, based in Nirn’s distant future. I know, I know, it sounds like an excuse to make something inherently not-lore-friendly into something lore friendly, and that’s because it is. The idea of the mod itself is to bring something futuristic and new into the world of Skyrim, as well as some original content. Now, I don’t claim to be a high quality triple a dev. My work is mediocre at best, but I do my best to make what I can.

A Little Lore

At this early stage it’s hard to give you a lot of information about what you can expect, because I don’t even have the mod’s plot fleshed out start to end yet. What I can deliver you is some lore. Below you’ll find some examples of internal mod lore, as delivered by Finnegan, who will eventually be the main NPC in the mod, and voiced by me, because fuck you, that’s why. Forewarning, I didn’t cut out any of the inhales. I makes some pretty epic inhales.








God I’m an embarrassment to myself. The information in these clips is of course subject to change. For example, the existence of Aethershot Armaments in the final mod is entirely dependant on if I can actually figure out a way to make a working gun. The warrens you heard about are pictured above, and below.


The Warrens

To elaborate a little more on what you just heard (if you bothered listening to that mess), the basic story of Knox will revolve around the player’s discovery of an Ur-Sotha door. For those of you who may be familiar with Trainwiz’s mods, specifically aethernautics, you may recognise the term with relation to the Chronographers, and it is indeed the same type of door, with the same lore. The Chronographers will also play a part in the mod, though I’d rather not mention more at the moment. Essentially, the idea is that the player will find themselves catapulted forward into the early part of the 6th era (not yet confirmed) and dropped right into the middle of a city mired in the depths of its own despair, and in a world that hasn’t seen the likes of a Dragonborn in hundreds, if not thousands of years. It’s fair to say, they want some heroic saving.

 When Can I Have It?

And there’s the catch. As with anything made by one guy all by his lonesome, it’s going to take time. I was worried about even making an announcement post like this, because I can’t even guarantee the mod will ever be completed. What I will say is that should the mod come to a grinding halt for a long period, I will release what I have into the wild. You will not be left entirely without, even if it never gets finished. As for any kind of release schedule, so much is uncertain at the moment, even including the scope of the mod, so making even a rough guess at completion would be folly.

What I can say is that I will keep you up to date as I make any big moves towards completion, and you can continue to expect other smaller mods from me in the meantime. This will not be taking up my time exclusively. I also may have plans to integrate Skyrim Academy with this mod. The intention would be to make Skyrim Academy a VR game inside the Knox world. I would finally have my sort-of-lore-friendly solution! Wouldn’t that be great?

Final Thoughts?

Please don’t ask for early access to Knox. If I haven’t given it to you already, you won’t be getting it, and I’d hate to offend people by having to tell them no. The mod will be released when it’s released, and you can keep tabs on it here and on my tumblr. Those are your options. Rest assured, this mod is something I very much want to see completed myself, so if any mod I make has a chance of getting done, it’s this one.

    Love it. I can’t even imagine how much time and effort you put into all these mods–all on your own. :O For me, these “alternative realities” are what give the game more replay value, and just fun to “mess around” with. *looks warily behind for any lore-defenders” =P

        I’m a Lore Master, but don’t worry, you are in a pretty nice path and your “Knox and Aethernet” ideas are almost completely Lore-Friendly. With the advance of society it’s certain trough the C0DA that futuristic advances will happen to TES world: “We hided ourselves behind 0s and 1s only to understand the full meaning of our destiny is to be destroyed and crushed by the turning gears of the Numidium is return” (Probably the 5th Era Loveletter) And the Aethernet may happen too, since mages in the late 3rd Era already used a similar system to communicate and trough the same way they may take control over the Dreamsleeve and create the Aethernet trough memory broadcasting and transmission (The same way the mages of the 3rd Era did) Of course there is the problem of the fact that Nirn is destroyed in the late 5th Era so the 6th Era would never have existed but lets ignore that and pardon you since you already did an awesome work and i don’t want to take this beauty away from you with such vague argument. keep up with the good work and don’t forget to stay awesome and i still wait that this may maintain its original idea and become a quest mod. Goodbye Halo don’t forget to continue awesome as always!

          Well, I stopped trying to be lore friendly quite a while ago in lieu of just making fun things, so I’m not too worried about it any more, but thanks for the info.

    I was lurking up to this point, but I really love skyrim academy, and I have to say…thank god somebody is making a sci-fi mod finally. Kudos to you. I don’t have the time. :P

    Also, I’m not sure if you care, but for guns – can I suggest you load http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/26605/ up in the CK and see how they did things? Not saying to copy, but it might help. Just a tip. :)

      In fact I was working on Skyrim Academy just last night. Albeit just some minor bug fixes. Still, Skyrim Academy is not done.
      I also have other mods I’m working on, which is why Knox will not be released for a very long time, if at all.

    I found myself thinking about this project and I wanted to check – if we leave NPC’s there, will they “live” in the environment, that is move from cell to cell, or will they stay in the cell in which they’re dropped?

    And do you find it odd that random people find themselves thinking about your work?

    Love the creepy sci-fi horror in the warrens. not gonna lie, I would love to see it become its own thing and grow into in depth playable game.

    right now, traveling the warrens unarmed, trying to not get seen is the most fun I have had in a long time!

    I’d like to help out with assets, I can texture, bug test, mesh work (simple). I’m great at bug testing and can nav mesh. I have 775 mods installed in Stable Skyrim with fast travel.

      I certainly appreciate the offer, but the Aether Suite is a solo project by choice. It’s something I do in my own time, and for my own enjoyment, when I feel like it. It will always be that way.
